FAQ about grippers and gripper pads
Grippers for clamping devices, vice jaws and gripping systems
Grippers°and gripper inserts are essential components in clamping technology. They are suitable for use in various systems, such as clamping arms,°gripper systems, vice jaws, self-aligning pads and clamping devices. °Grippers°reliably ensure the transmission of extremely high torques and above-average retaining force. And this even°with° surface irregularities°and hard materials.
Grippers prevent workpieces from slipping, thereby enabling positive or frictional clamping. This ensures precise clamping even on dirty, oily or uneven surfaces. By simply replacing the gripper inserts, worn surfaces can be removed quickly and easily and replaced with new°grippers. This protects a fixture from wear, with only the insert being a wear part.
Applications for°grippers
Grippers°are used in various sectors. Their main application areas can be summarised as follows:
Vice jaw plates: When inserted into jaw plates, grippers help to transmit clamping forces. This prevents a workpiece from slipping during machining. For example°°grippers°are used in machine construction for various assembly processes.
Clamping arms:°Gripper inserts in clamping arms are used to secure workpieces. This enables them to be precisely machined or moved. For example,°grippers can be used in metalworking to secure metal sheets to CNC tables.
Gripping systems:°In°gripping systems,°grippers°ensure that components are lifted precisely and transported safely by automated systems. An application here would be e.g. electrical installation.
Self-aligning pads:°By self-aligning pads, gripper inserts ensure that delicate parts are held securely. In the packaging industry, these can be used for e.g. sheet metal parts or glass panels.
Clamping devices: In clamping fixtures,°grippers°are used to secure workpieces either frictionally or positively. This ensures a high level of machining accuracy, which is required in e.g. milling fixtures or also clamping devices used in toolmaking.
Different types of°grippers
The°norelem°range includes various types of grippers. These differ in terms of their shape, surface and material. The following gripper inserts are available from°norelem:
°Grippers°are available in various shapes, each representing a different version. The following versions are available:
hardened and black oxidised (Forms C & F)
hardened and bright (Form E)
white°(Form K)
with diamond impregnated surface (Form O)
with polyurethane surface (Form P)
with carbide serrations and black oxidised (Form M)
Forms C, F and M are made from tool steel. Forms E, O and P are made from stainless steel, whilst Form K is made from POM.
Round grippers and inserts with counterbores:
Round grippers and inserts with counterbores are available in the Forms C, F, E, K and O. Form K is also made from POM, Forms C and F are tool steel, and Forms E and O are stainless steel.
Hexagonal°gripper°screws are a hexagon head bolt (grade 10.9) with a serrated carbide insert (72-74 HRC) attached to the hexagonal head. The screw permits the hex head bolt to be easily fitted into the relevant fixtures and systems.
The range also includes the following°grippers°:
Carbide gripper pads
Carbide gripper pads provide wear-resistant and dimensionally stable support surfaces for a variety of applications. The hardness and compressive strength of these components are advantageous for applications in which workpieces need to be precisely positioned and securely supported – even under heavy loads or other challenging conditions.
Applications and versions of gripper pads from°norelem
Gripper pads can be used wherever high wear resistance and dimensionally stable support are°required. Classic applications include e.g. clamping fixtures, assembly fixtures and test and measurement devices.
The°norelem°range includes two different types of gripper pads.
Both types of gripper pad are made from carbide and sintered. Both the round and square gripper pads are available in a range of versions.
Round carbide gripper pads:
serrated°
finely serrated°
4-point contact°
Square carbide gripper pads:
serrated°
finely serrated°
wedge-shaped

What are°grippers?
Grippers are small, round or square inserts. These are fitted into clamping elements, clamping arms,°gripper jaws° or other fixtures to prevent workpieces from slipping, even when high clamping or gripping forces are applied.
What is the difference between°grippers°and gripper pads?
Although gripper pads and°grippers°are similar, they are not identical auxiliary components in clamping technology. They differ in both purpose and function
Gripper inserts (Grippers):
Function: Punctiform gripping or contact faces for fixating workpieces
Purpose: Power transmission, precise fixation, secure gripping without slipping
Gripper pads:
Function: Support for stabilising workpieces
Purpose: Supporting workpieces and protection from deformation and damage
